Ethnic Differences Across Generations nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;Gish Jenââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Whoââ¬â¢s Irish?â⬠explores a Chinese grandmotherââ¬â¢s thoughts and beliefs about her ethnically integrated family. The grandmother tells the story as though she is looking back on past events and thinking about how they have affected her present life. As her tale begins, she identifies her granddaughter, Sophie, as a wild three-year-old (161). Subsequently, the grandmother offers the suggestion, ââ¬Å"You spank her, sheââ¬â¢ll stopâ⬠because she considers it acceptable based on her cultural background (164). However, John and Natalie are against spanking because they believe it gives children low self-esteem, and ââ¬Å"In America, parents not supposed to spank the child.â⬠(165). After many frustrating attempts to get Sophie to keep her clothes on, the grandmother spanks her anyway (165). Following that, Sophie keeps her clothes on in the park, but the grandmother does not reveal to Natalie how she succeeded in gaining Sophieââ¬â¢s compliance (165). This success leads to a short period of harmony between Sophie, the grandmother, and Natalie. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;During this period of concord, the grandmother believes she can ââ¬Å"help her [Sophieââ¬â¢s] Chinese side fight against her wild side.â⬠(166). She does this by teaching Sophie good habits such as not eating food with her hands, not playing with garbage cans, and not hitting anyone (166). The grandmother continues to spank Sophie despite knowing that Natalie disapproves of this method of discipline. Clearly, the sixty-eight-year-old grandmother has been forced to rely on her own ethnic experience, which is that of a Chinese immigrant, to control herShow MoreRelatedHispanics and the Religious Landscape1167 Words à |à 5 PagesCharismatic movements are a key attribute of worship for Hispanics in many of the major religious traditions ââ¬â far more so than among non-Latinos. The Pros And Cons Of The Equal Rights Amendment - 1239 Words
The full text of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) reads as follows, ââ¬Å"Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sexâ⬠(qtd. in Stewart 33). These twenty-four words would become some of the most controversial of the twentieth century. Under the nineteenth amendment, American women obtained the right to vote in 1920. This amendment inspired Alice Paul to draft the first ERA which she then introduced to the United States Congress in 1923. After this first proposal, the ERA would eventually be proposed in each succeeding session of Congress (Stewart 33). Despite its introduction every year for fifty years, the ERA did not accumulate a strong opposing force until after itâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The opponents viewed the traditional role of Housewife as the most fulfilling job a woman could have; Schlafly herself called the American housewife a ââ¬Å"domestic economistâ⬠(46). Those involved wit h Schlaflyââ¬â¢s STOP ERA campaign saw the proposed amendment as a way to force women to be more like men by pressuring them to take jobs outside the home and provide for themselves themselves rather than be financially supported solely by their husbands. Reverend Jerry Falwell once said, ââ¬Å"God Almighty created men and women biologically different and with differing needs and roles. Good husbands who are godly men are good leaders. Their wives and children want to follow themâ⬠(B5). According to this man, God wanted women to be subject to their husbands. Ratification of the ERA could allow women to no longer be bound by their husbands, therefore upsetting God and his idea of what a family should be. As simple as it sounds, extending the Constitution to women through the ERA, led the religious to oppose it because of the fear it would create disruption within the traditional Judeo-Christian family structure. Another supposed attack on the family was the presumed inclusion of a womanââ¬â¢s right to abortion in the Equal Rights Amendment, though it was never actually included in the text of the ERA.Show MoreRelatedPros and Cons of the Equal Rights Amendment Essay1285 Words à |à 6 PagesPros and Cons of the Equal Rights Amendment The Equal Rights Amendment began its earliest discussions in 1920. She is seeking to make the best for the household. but most of the clip neither Jake or her low excess stops her. Beth truly wants the household to turn. but the household is really hapless. Jake Heke is evidently the adversary. as he ever gets his manner when reasoning with Beth. He is besides seen as the adversary in the film because he is the evil individual in the film. Jake hatreds everything about the maori civilization. he refers to them as a barbarian people. The Maori is a people that value religious peace. freedom and they have tonss of traditions. You can still happen maori folks around New Zealand. Some of them are maintaining the linguistic communication alive. The maori people have certain dances and rites to different occasions. You can clearly see that Jake doesnââ¬â¢t appreciate the maori civilization in this film. and I think that it is the struggle. Jake is about looking down upon the household like. he is in control and gives the orders in the house. Jake doesnââ¬â¢t see beth as an equal individual to him. and in the terminal of the film Beth stand up in protest and proves that Jake is non in control and he still is a slave. I think that civilizations like the maori civilization is of import to the universe. It reminds me what was good about it. You have to retrieve that the yesteryear is the key to the hereafter. and in times like these. people could utilize a small antique manner. It makes people experience save in this fast moving universe if they have some tradition they can return to. They are really good to remind ââ¬Å"what to doâ⬠and to acquire together with your friends and household. and non to trail the American dream.
